Backerkit for Leder Games:

Early Draft of Ahoy:

New Horizons

Project Brief

I created these templates under the direction of Pati Hyun, working off of previous Kickstarters Leder Games had created (in particular, their Root Marauders page), pre-existing assets (and a few meeple prototypes I was able to scrounge up), as well as all the new information I had gleaned from both the early phases of playtesting and documents. Due to the uncertain nature of what Ahoy: New Horizons would become at the time, I created different versions that both included and omitted factions and info blocks. I departed Leder Games in September 2023, so the Backerkit did undergo significant changes as the game evolved and more information was cemented prior to launch. The official Backerkit launched in mid-November 2023 and has since been closed and fully funded. I personally cannot wait to get my copy.

Please note that a lot of this is filler text and does not reflect my ability to write compelling copy.

Image Plates

Working in Photoshop, I assembled images for each section of the Backerkit:

  • Pledge Levels: At the time I was working on this, we were set to only have two tiers: one for entirely new content, and one that included both the new content and the base Ahoy game. This was also an area where I designed alternate plates: One featuring the Leviathan meeple prototypes and one without. This was because 1. there was not a lot of information on the Leviathan (which was not named at the time), and 2. I wasn’t sure if that was going to be included at Launch, or if that was going to be a later addition or surprise. Obviously, looking at the BGG page, neither of those hold true now, but I firmly believe it’s the thought that counts.
  • Add-Ons: This section may be removed when Kit launches, because the initial brief I got for this project did not include any Add-Ons. I still included it, because who would know if plans would change?
  • First Impressions: This section was initially designed to be one piece. However, since each reviewer’s blurb would link to their page with their review, the plate needed to be broken up. Additionally, I found that Backerkit would allow for images to be tiled next to each other, so that’s what I did.
  • Shipping: This plate, admittedly, turned out a little silly. The intent was to show that, if a Backer joined at the second tier (new+base content), the base game would ship immediately, and the new content would ship when it was finished.
  • Timeline: Rough timeline for Backerkit open/close, development and design milestones, and print and delivery milestones, with dummy text.
  • Streaming Schedule: Leder Games streams their updates in what work is going on pretty regularly over on Twitch, so having those “Design Chats” that will focus on Ahoy: New Horizons is imperative.
  • About Leder Games: Leder Games is an Indie Board Game Studio based in St. Paul. They have about 10 full time employees and are very proud of the work they do (as they should be!) All full-time employees are listed with a picture at the end of their Kickstarters (and, going forward, their Backerkit pages), as well as their position, and in lieu of a bio, the team answers a tangentially related question. For Arcs, their space wars game that should be nearing completion, the question was space crushes. I put in “Favorite Sea Creature”, but I’m certain they’ll come up with something better than that. This was another area where I offered two options, one with the paragraph “about”, and one without. At current point, Leder Games has a dedicated audience (which, granted, a chunk are simply there for Root and its expansions), who knows very well who they are. In which case, the paragraph can be left out, but I doubt they will. Again, the thought counts.
  • Headers, Subheaders, and Buttons (Oh My!): For the large blocks of text that are not on the Photoshop images, and are rather plain text, I created some headers and subheaders to aid in breaking up the text and to keep the page feeling cohesive. Additionally, buttons were included as CTAs directing prospective Backers to subscribe to Leder Games’ Twitch for those design chats, to join the Discord, or to view estimated shipping rates.

As stated above, this design underwent significant changes after my departure from Leder Games because of ongoing development of the game. If you are so inclined, Late Pledges are still open for the game as of this page’s publishing (June 16, 2024). You can find that pledge page here
